  • Arat Kilo

    It was a Frenchman, the infinitely curious Francis Falceto, who sparked a worldwide craze for Ethiopian music in the mid-1990s, reissuing the marvels recorded 20 or 30 years before by Mahmoud Ahmed or Mulatu Astatke. Ethio-jazz then became a kind of national genre in France, practiced with zeal by dozens of groups. >>> Arat Kilo

Among them, Arat Kilo is a leader, especially since the release of Visions of Selam, a masterful album recorded with Malian singer Mamani Keita and Boston rapper Mike Ladd. The six Parisians demonstrate such knowledge of the workings of Ethiopian music that they can now combine it with soul, Afrobeat or Mandingo traditions without getting lost, thus extending the approach of the pioneers of ethio-jazz, they too in constant search of new horizons. Transported from stage to stage for two years, their portion of Africa reconnected to the Americas reconciles fans of hip hop, jazz and African music, all finally united by the multicolored and turbulent groove of a group of the future.

    >>> Part 1: Exilians Extended

    Somewhere between the Avengers and the X-Men, the Exillians are superheroes in their own way. Their superpowers come to them from their double - sometimes even triple - culture. Rapper from Boston, Mike Ladd has lived in France for a long time. Also from Ile-de-France, singer Ngnima Sarr, alias Tie, speaks Wolof, Serer, French and English. A child of Birmingham, a large industrial city in central England, Juice Aleem was born to a Jamaican mother and a Trinidadian father. The gifts of these three wandering mutants allow them to see beyond immediate realities, to navigate through societies and to lavish - inspired by the first rhythms traffickers, the sailors - an Afro-futuristic music that opens to the public doors of new dimensions. At the end of their concert, even Superman will look very pale to you ...
