  • Discover the restoration work of the architect François Debret of Saint-Denis basilica

François Debret, a romantic architect-restorer: during the Revolution, the basilica had been vandalized. In the nineteenth century, considerable work was undertaken, and at the end of the Empire, in 1813, the work was finally entrusted to the architect François Debret (1777-1850).

On the occasion of this exhibition, admire the original creations of François Debret such as a carved column. It was inspired by that of the twelfth century and was recently found in the reserves of the museum Cluny and was restored especially for the exhibition.

The projects, preparatory drawings and sketches that trace the restorations of François Debret come from public collections, including the National Archives, the National Library of France, the Louvre Museum, the National School of Fine Arts of Paris, but also the Departmental Archives of Seine-Saint-Denis, the Municipal Archives of Saint-Denis, or the Antoine-Vivenel Museum in Compiegne.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a free visit application allows to explore the windows created by François Debret, which constitute the majority of stained glass windows in place today, and to discover the iconography. It will be downloadable on Google Play from November 29, and on the Appstore mid-December. The application is also available in English and Spanish.
