  • Contemporary art, historical works and ethnographic objects come together in the museum rooms to showcase body and sport!

  • The Olympics and Paralympics bring together athletes and spectators from around the world to share the thrill of surpassing oneself and breaking records, the jubilation of victory or the sadness of defeat. The Olympics and Paralympics bring together athletes and spectators from around the world to share the thrill of surpassing oneself and breaking records, the jubilation of victory or the sadness of defeat. But what is behind these moments? What are the necessary conditions for achieving these sporting performances? How do they engage the body and mind and what do they mean about our societies?

Part of the dynamic of the Cultural Olympiad, the exhibition proposed at the Paul Eluard art and history museum, by the City of Saint-Denis and the Department of Seine-Saint-Denis, opens up some avenues in turn poetic, scientific, offbeat or engaged to explore these issues.

This multidisciplinary exhibition brings artists’ perspectives into dialogue with historical works and ethnographic objects. It invites visitors to explore the spaces of the museum in a renewed way, through a questioning around the body of the athlete, trained, measured, cared for, augmented or mutilated, erected as a model or an object of worship. It shows the ambivalence of performance, between subjugation and self-transcendence, and analyzes how the body in movement, thanks to technical excellence, constitutes a vector of affirmation, emancipation, even protest.

An audiovisual journey around the words of “great witnesses” (athletes, journalists, coaches, Carmelites, etc.), linked to the themes of the exhibition, enriches and questions the works.

An associated cultural program will further explore the fertile links between the practice of sport and artistic creation, combining performances, shows and workshops. Hip-hop and break dancing will hold a special place as they make their debut at the Games.

Finally, particular attention was paid in this exhibition to cultural mediation for very young children (story-telling tour, nursery tour or even adapted tour booklet).
