  • In the Banlieues: Oakland/Saint-Denis, a series of international exhibitions on the suburbs in France and the United States, is being presented simultaneously in Paris, Saint-Denis, notably at the MSH Paris Nord, San Francisco and Oakland.

  • Whatever you call them - suburbs, peripheries, suburbs, urban fringes... this exhibition highlights the symbolic reversal of the centre to the periphery. Artistic movements, social struggles, urban innovations: the suburbs of Oakland in California and Saint-Denis are today imposing their influence and inventing solutions to the challenges of poverty and accelerated urban development that metropolises face.

    Bringing together a hybrid corpus of archival images, models, paintings, art installations, objects and videos, this exhibition explores cultural and inhabitant practices in urban planning. Places, people and stories make up the exhibition, drawing, far from clichés, portraits of composite suburbs.
