Dance - Carte blanche Passinho

Cultural ,  Dance in Saint-Ouen
16 Full-fare
  • Smaïl Kanouté is given carte blanche to explore passinho, a dance based on rapid footwork that originated in the favelas. The choreographer and two Brazilians with a dazzling hybrid dance style present a performance followed by short dance films made in Rio.

  • As the Brazilian Olympic delegation settles in Saint-Ouen for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, we asked Smaïl Kanouté to explore his hybrid dance, passinho, "small steps in Portuguese", a dance based on ultra-fast footwork that originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the early 2000s.
A dance that began with simple steps at funk parties (carioca funk or baile funk) and grew from party to party, year after year, until it had its own culture.

Smaïl Kanouté and two Brazilians with a highly interesting performative and hybrid dance style (incorporating capoiera and voguing) will present a 30-minute performance, followed by screenings of short films the choreographer made in Rio.
His film Bala Funk will be on show, a powerful 4-minute tribute to the victims of the massacre in the Jacarezinho favela during a police operation at a funk party.

Smaïl Kanouté's aim is to explore the urgency to live and create that he encountered in Brazil, and to bring out the quiet strength of his dance as a challenge to life.
