An immigrant's story

Cultural ,  Dance in Saint-Ouen

  • With incredible stage presence, the choreographer interprets the complex journey of the 'outsider', migrating from classical to contemporary dance, from Kenya to the USA.

Carried by her incredible stage presence, her solo An Immigrant's Story crosses her own story with those of the migrants she has met. Kenya, the United States, France: three countries, three continents and a multitude of cultures feed the work of Wanjiru Kamuyu. Carried by her incredible stage presence, her solo An Immigrant's Story crosses her own story with those of the migrants she has met. Wanjiru Kamuyu questions the complex journey of the "foreigner", the status and the gaze of the other and brings a critical (but also amused) look at the notions of centre and periphery.

A story between body and voice, with as much grace as commitment in a physical contemporary dance influenced by dances of the African continent and diaspora.

Following the creation of this solo, Wanjiru Kamuyu wanted to make it accessible to the deaf and hearing impaired.

In collaboration with the dancer Nelly Celerine and the LSF coach Carlos Carreras, sign language is approached from a choreographic point of view: just as dance is a language in itself, the sign is worked on in relation to the meaning transmitted. The solo then becomes a duet!

The show is accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing.
