Festival of Saint-Denis - Bach / Berio

Cultural ,  Festival ,  Concert at Saint-Denis
  • This classical music festival has got international fame by inviting the world's greatest talents for 50 years!

On the program tonight: works by Bach (Motets BWV 225, 227 and 229) and Berio (Coro). With the musicAeterna Chorus and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Teodor Currentzis.

With all the exigency and intensity that characterize him, Teodor Currentzis puts in the Basilica the powerful elevation of Bach's motets, masterpieces borne by the voices of his choir from Perm, and the play Dense and organic of Berio, Coro. The latter aims to reconcile scholarly music with popular music, notably in the use of a "verbal material" mingled with texts from around the world and poetic fragments by Pablo Neruda.

In a unique stage arrangement where each chorister forms a couple with a performer, Berio invents not only a chorus of voices and instruments, but also brings out various ways of putting into music, like so many climates and changing landscapes. The strong image of a united humanity emerges.

Teodor Currentzis interrogates and brings together two peaks of polyphony that only three centuries separate and invests the Basilica in all its dimensions.
